Mr. Kwok Chi Yip Former teacher at Heep |
After reading the DSS proposal submitted to the EDB, I must applaud the educational practitioners who have selflessly committed themselves to achieving such a profound aim in education. Yesterday, I joined Mr. H.S. Ngan to visit the school during the lunch break in support of my former colleagues. I found that the whole school was attending Easter services at the Holy Trinity Cathedral. I took the liberty of walking around the campus. The basketball court was fully occupied with players who were warming up and getting prepared for their inter-house basketball competitions, an event that has taken place every year on this particular afternoon for the past decade or so. This is in fact the only timeslot available in the girls' tight schedules. What a resounding name the 'Heep Yunn Basketball Team' has been all these years! In the early 1980s, when I was offered a teaching position at HYS by Mrs. M. Lai, then Headmistress of the school, the basketball court was my 'dream classroom' outside my formal teaching responsibilities. I have had 24 years of wonderful dreams here. Once upon a time, a group of girls were passionate about basketball and dreamed of achieving good results in the inter-school competitions, so we trained and practiced, and trained and practiced some more. When we got our first trophy, we started to think about getting another, and our ultimate dream was to win the championship for girls' basketball. The cheers and shouts of joy from the players, the cheering team of girls, teachers, parents and even strangers formed a touching symphony of joy for all. After the prize presentation, the school song was sung, showing to one and all the strong bond of passion in the school. Training camps are part and parcel of life as an athlete in the school. Every morning the players would gather for prayers, asking the Lord for confidence, courage and bravery, to honour fair play, and to protect all competitors from injury. Our basketball coach then gave the girls their next goal – to get into university. In fact, these past few decades have witnessed the success of our holistic education, promoting a mode where learning and teaching is not confined to textbooks and the classroom, but includes regular morning assemblies and a whole range of extra-curricular activities. Students are encouraged to engage in active learning and explore their own potentials outside the classrooms. When Heep Yunn girls get together, there are very few things they cannot achieve. Eagles never flee or hide from the storm. They always ride the winds and fly up to great heights. Heep Yunn, may you soar like the eagle to fulfill the big dream that the Lord has planned for you! |
